Auburn City Manager Woodbury E. Brackett today refuted recent published reports that there is such a critical labor shortage in the Lewiston-Auburn area that at least two firms will import Puerto Rican laborers to meet their manpower needs. The city manager acknowledged that he has received reports that two local firms had been considering the importation of Cuban laborers but said that as far as he knows, this plan has been abandoned, “They wouldn’t be at all suited for this area, either of them,” Brackett said, “There’s such a difference in climate as well as the language barrier, it would be completely foreign to them,” he stated.

Lewiston residents may find their City Building more convenient next fall, after a new phase of renovations is completed. Phase 18 of the six-part project includes locating council chambers, the city administration’s suite of offices and the personnel department on the first floor, said Mark Adams, assistant to the city administrator. The City Council in September appropriated $100,000 for the work, which is expected to go to bid in February and be completed by mid-summer. Also available for the project are $175,000 saved from Phase IA and $250,000 from other projects, Adams said. Phase IA included construction of a courtyard, a portion of sidewalk, new entrances on Park and Pine streets, a records storage area and three public restrooms. During Phase IB, the old municipal court will be transformed into the City Council’s meeting area, which will seat more people — 75 versus 60 — and provide easier access than the current chambers on the third floor.
