Moonlight Challenge

BRIDGTON —  Shawnee Peak hosts the SECOND Annual Moonlight Challenge on Jan. 22, which will include an evening of friendly competition for skiers and snowboarders who compete for the fastest clocked time and to raise the most money in support of The Maine Children’s Cancer Program (MCCP).

Access to the mountain starts at moon and the race kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Participants can register online at www.MoonlightChallenge.org.

Last year’s Moonlight Challenge featured 150 participants and successfully raised over $20,000. This year, they’re hoping to exceed $30,000 and to make the event even better. A second course has been added so that skiers and snow boarders will each have their own gates and prizes — including big-ticket items like USSA Gold Passes with round-trip JetBlue airfare to Colorado, tickets to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, and Shawnee Peak season passes.The event will also feature an after-ski buffet dinner, outdoor heated bar, awards ceremony, live music and dancing.

Skiers or snowboarders of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend. All of the proceeds will benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program to help local children in their fight against cancer.

Pond hockey

SIDNEY — Winter has arrived and, like most winter sport lovers, the organizers of the fourth annual Maine Pond Hockey Classic are grateful for the recent shift in weather.  This year’s tournament will be held on Feb. 12 to the 14 at the Snow Pond Center for the Arts on Snow Pond (Messalonskee Lake) in Sidney.

The Maine Pond Hockey Classic offers seven divisions for players of varying ages and ability levels: Open “A”, Open “B”, Women’s, COED, Recreational, 40+, and a “College” Division. Each division winner will receive a prize pack, including complimentary entry to the following year’s tournament, championship sweatshirts, and a unique trophy featuring the State of Maine silhouette cut from old hockey sticks.

Registration for the 2016 Maine Pond Hockey Classic closes Jan.12, after which point teams can submit their name to a wait list. Each team plays three-pool play games for seeding followed by a single elimination tournament. Pond hockey is played 4 on 4 without goalies or on-ice officials, and each team is allowed to have up to seven players on their roster.
