JAY — Firefighters quickly put out a small grease fire Monday at Verso’s Androscoggin Mill. It was contained in a gear box in a kiln, fire Deputy Chief Corey Leclerc said.

“It was a chemical fire,” he said.

Verso’s Fire Brigade had the majority of the fire out before Jay firefighters were called in, he said.

“We used foam” to put out the remainder of the fire, Leclerc said. The fire was out in about an hour.

Tim Hardy, director of Franklin County Emergency Management Agency and deputy chief with Farmington Fire Rescue Department, was called to the mill to help answer questions.

About 30 firefighters from Jay, Farmington, Livermore, Livermore Falls and Wilton responded to the fire reported at 12:24 p.m. The majority of fire departments staged at the wood entrance to the mill before they were released to return to stations.
