PARIS — Richard Marin of Bethel has been indicted on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a serious accident last October.
Martin, 46, was charged in October two days after his vehicle struck a bicyclist on Church Street in Bethel.
According to the accident report, at 1:45 p.m. Oct. 16, 2015, “the weather was good, the sky was clear and it was daylight” when Dylan Rivard was bicycling along the side of Church Street where there was a line of parked cars.
Rivard “drove out into the roadway between two parked cars,” according to the report, “failed to yield” to traffic and rode into the path of the 2012 Kia being driven by Marin.
Rivard, 14, an accomplished ski racer in his hometown of Goffstown, N.H., was critically injured and transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland. According to paramedics at the scene, Rivard suffered head injuries and broken bones.
He was wearing a helmet.
According to police, Marin left the scene of the accident and was located two days later where he was arrested at his home. His vehicle was impounded after he was charged, and police reconstructed the accident to determine if he had time to swerve to avoid hitting Rivard.
According to reporting officer Oxford County Deputy Andrew Whitney, even if police determine Marin could not have avoided the accident “obviously they’ve still hit-and-run and left the scene.”
Marin made his initial appearance in 8th District Court in October and was later released from the Oxford County Jail on $2,000 cash bail. He was issued a summons on the indictment.
If convicted, he faces up to 5 years in jail and a $5,000 fine.
According to the Gould Academy website, Rivard is a student there where he is on the ski team.
