100 years ago, 1916
Mrs. Fannie Wilkins of Union Street, Auburn, lost $300 in currency yesterday morning. She had drawn the money to meet a bill, and placed it under the tablecloth for safe keeping. A lighted lamp was placed directly over it, and the lamp exploded, burning the tablecloth and money along with it. The fire department’s chemical truck was called, but there was no other damage.
50 years ago, 1966
An Auburn man, manager of a well-known New Auburn restaurant for more than a decade, has taken over the operation of a Center Street eating establishment. Gerald Keene of 203 Winter Street recently purchased the Sea Moor Restaurant at 63 Center Street from Mrs. Glenys Reidy of Auburn. Keene, for a number of years, was the manager of Sim’s in New Auburn. The Sea Moor specializes in sea foods and other popular meals. The restaurant also holds a malt liquor license. Counter service is available as well as booths. Tables are available outside the restaurant for outdoor dining during the summer.

Greyhounds may be running at Lewiston Raceway under a plan being developed by Twin Cities businessmen that will require legislative action to legalize dog racing in the state. Rep. Roger Pouliot, D-Lewiston, confirmed Monday that he has been approached about the potential need for such legislation, which would be necessary to allow a group of developers to convert Lewiston Raceway from a harness horse to a greyhound track. But local businessmen associated with the effort are remaining tightlipped about the status of the project, saying any comment would be “premature.”
