RUMFORD — Police said an Industry man was charged Friday with sexually assaulting a woman and preventing her from calling for help.

Zachary Webber, 34, was arrested in Mexico by Patrolman Lawrence Briggs on charges of attempted gross sexual assault, obstructing the report of a crime or injury, operating under the influence and operating after revocation, Rumford Police Chief Stacy Carter said in a news release.

Webber was transported to the Oxford County Jail in Paris and is scheduled to appear in Rumford District Court at 8:30 a.m. May 9.

Carter said Rumford Police Officer Lawrence Briggs and Sgt. James Bernard responded to a 911 call at about 5 p.m. Friday from a person who apparently got disconnected. An Oxford Regional Communications Center dispatcher called the number back and spoke with a female who said she’d been assaulted and was able to get away from her attacker.

Sgt. Bernard found Webber’s vehicle in Mexico and arrested him.
