ORONO — The Collins Center for the Arts will go to the dogs. And cats, parrots, goats and a miniature horse when the World Famous Popovich Pet Theater takes the stage at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3.
For the last nine years, the family-friendly extravaganza has been based at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. It includes European-style clowns, juggling and balancing acts and adorable performing pets, including cats and dogs rescued from animal shelters. Popovich, a master animal trainer, employs positive-reinforcement techniques to coach the pets to perform tasks based on their individual personalities and talents.
The child of Russian circus performers holds the world record in a balancing/juggling feat in which he stands atop a 9-foot, free-standing ladder and juggles nine rings.
The World Famous Popovich Pet Theater, a finalist on “America’s Got Talent” has appeared on “Late Night with David Letterman” and “The Tonight Show” and has been featured in “People,” “The New Yorker” and “USA TODAY.” The Circus Fans Association of America named Popovich the 2009 Entertainer of the Year.
