Local author and Maine Guide Doug Dunlap has released his latest book, “Snowshoe and Cross-Country Skiing in the Western Mountains of Maine,” published in January 2016.
The 234-page guidebook describes 34 opportunities for foot travel on snow in the regions of Rangeley-Saddleback, Flagstaff-Bigelow, Carrabassett Valley-Sugarloaf, Weld-Tumbledown, and the Farmington-Foothills. Dunlap has personally snowshoed or skied every trail in the book and provides a firsthand account of trail conditions, views and wildlife sightings. The book includes photos, locator maps and map recommendations, elevation gain, and note-taking pages for field observations.
As with the author’s other outdoor guides, this book is two books in one — a trail guide and a “how to” book. There are details on trip planning, safety, gear and clothing for winter conditions, outings with children, and when, where and how to include the family dog.
The book is available at Franklin County bookstores and outfitters, other retail outlets and by emailing the author at footandpaddle@gmail.com.
