LEWISTON — A Mass of Christian Burial honoring the life of William J. “Chick” Leahey Jr. was celebrated by the Rev. Paul Dumais Saturday, April 2, at Holy Family Church of the Prince of Peace Parish.

At the entrance of the church, William’s two sons, Matthew and Mark Leahey, draped Chick’s casket with a white burial pall, signifying his baptism into a new spiritual life with God.

Scripture readings were proclaimed by Chick’s son, Matt Leahey and Chick’s daughter, Barbara Sullivan. The Prayer of the Faithful was recited by Chick’s son, Retired Col. Mark Leahey. The offertory gifts were brought to the altar by Chick’s granddaughters, Erin Vaughan, Maggie Sullivan and Ellie and Kaitlyn Leahey. Words of Remembrance were shared at the end of Mass by Chick’s daughter, Dr. Ann-Marie Leahey.

Following a funeral procession to Mount Hope Cemetery, the U.S. Marine Corps honor detail played taps and presented our country’s flag to Chick’s wife, Ruth, in appreciation of her husband’s service to his country during World War II.

The pallbearers were Michael Leahey, James Sylvia, Howard Vandersea, John Lawler, Robert Flynn and Web Harrison.

At the conclusion of services, all in attendance were invited to a reception of fellowship in honor of Chick in the Perry Atrium of Pettengill Hall at Bates College.

Final committal prayers and burial will be held later in the spring at the family plot at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Arrangements by Pinette Dillingham & Lynch Funeral Home of Lewiston.
