AUBURN — A Greene man was indicted Tuesday on charges that he used his dead father’s electronic benefits card and cashed the deceased man’s workers’ compensation checks.

Jason Seger, 36, faces three felony counts and a misdemeanor.

An Androscoggin County grand jury charged Seger with two counts of theft by unauthorized taking and one count of forgery. Each charge is a Class C felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.

According to court papers, Seger stole roughly $1,200 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, formerly known as food stamps, by using his father’s EBT card from July 13, 2015, to Jan. 16, 2016. Jason Seger’s father, Michael, died July 13, 2015.

Assistant Attorney General Leanne Robbin, who presented the state’s case to the grand jury, accused Seger of stealing nearly $3,000 in benefits from the Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company from July 21, 2015, to Jan 16. Seger also was charged with forgery by falsely endorsing his father’s signature on MEMIC checks that were payable to Michael Seger for $105.36 apiece.

Seger had been free while on a January deferred disposition agreement with prosecutors stemming from a charge of receiving stolen property. He had agreed to refrain from all criminal conduct for a year from Jan. 6.

He was indicted Tuesday on a charge of violating condition of release, a Class E misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail.
