AUBURN — The Androscoggin Retired Educators Association has announced that Bruce Bell of Auburn is the recipient of the AREA Leadership Award.
Bell taught school in Auburn from 1963 to 1986, served as principal at Telstar Middle School in Bethel and later at Woodstock School in Bryant Pond. Bell was also a trustee and treasurer for the Sixth Street Congregational Church and served as the Sunday School superintendent.
He is also a member of the Lewiston Elks Lodge No. 371 and a past secretary for the Androscoggin County Fish and Game Association.
Since retiring, Bell has been an active member of AREA, serving as treasurer for many years and as chair of the Community Service Committee. He established an annual auction that enabled the organization to fund scholarships for future teachers. Under his supervision, the committee has expanded its funds so several scholarships can be offered each year. Bell serves on the reading committee that selects scholarship recipients.
