Winter ecology at wildlife park

GRAY — The Maine Wildlife Park on Route 26 will host Winter Ecology with St. Joseph’s College from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20.

College professors and some of their students will discuss native Maine wildlife in winter. Presenters will cover topics such as wildlife survival strategies, wildlife track identification and winter wildlife photography.

There will be activities for children during this school vacation event.

Evening of Poetry April 20

BUCKFIELD — Zadoc Long Free Library, 5 Turner St., will host an Evening of Poetry from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the reading room area.

Rodney Abbott of West Paris will be the library’s guest speaker. Abbott is a former teacher at the high school in Buckfield and finds Robert Frost’s poetry especially interesting.

Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the poetry reading. Seating is limited and reservations are required.

Library’s Spring Seminar in Gardening

TURNER — Turner Public Library will hold its fifth annual Spring Seminar in Gardening from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23, in the Community Room at the Leavitt Institute building.

“Gateway to Herb Gardening: Growing and Using Six Basic Herbs” will be presented by Cindy Tibbetts, owner of Hummingbird Farm. She will also demonstrate how to make pesto.

Peter Young will present “I’ve Got the Green One; I’ve Got the Green and White One” hosta basics. He is a former school teacher, medic and dairy farmer. He has served as president of both the Maine Iris Society and the Maine Hosta Society.

A roundtable discussion will take place at 11:45 a.m. Those attending should bring their gardening questions, tips and expertise to share.

Coffee and doughnuts will be provided. Door prizes have been donated by Turner businesses. Lunch will be available to purchase.

Donations will be accepted.

Pine Grove Cemetery annual meeting

POLAND — The annual meeting of the directors and officers of the Pine Grove Cemetery Corporation of Poland will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at 67 Strout Road.

All lot owners and members of the corporation are encouraged to attend.

NAMI mental health courses 

MEXICO and NORWAY — National Alliance on Mental Illness will offer two mental health courses Friday, May 13.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course will be held at Region 9 Education Center in Mexico. The Adult Mental Health First Aid course will be held at the Norway Town Office on Danforth Street. Both courses are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Courses are free, except a $5 lunch fee. Participants will receive a three-year certification.

The youth course is designed to teach parents, teachers, neighbors, peers and caring citizens how to help youths or teenagers in crisis, or who are experiencing mental health or substance use challenges.

The adult course is for anyone 16 or older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health-related problem or crisis.

Fishing, hunting license services updated

AUGUSTA — The state’s online hunting and fishing license service has been enhanced to streamline the purchasing process and is now available for use on mobile devices.

The service now provides the capability for users to purchase licenses for up to three people in one transaction. Users can purchase licenses as gifts, which will be emailed directly to the recipient along with the link to the license. Emails will be sent immediately following the payment, or the user can specify a future date to send.

About 40 percent of hunting and fishing licenses are purchased online annually, according to the state.
