AUGUSTA — Author Deanna Bonner-Ganter will hold an author talk and book signing from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at Maine State Museum, 230 State St.

Bonner-Ganter will discuss and sign copies of her book “Kosti Ruohomaa: The Photographer Poet.”

Admission to the museum will be free and include activities about the art of photography.

Bonner-Ganter is a retired Maine State Museum curator who spent over 30 years researching Ruohomaa’s life and work. The book is the only biography of Ruohomaa and tells the story of his Finnish-American upbringing in Vermont and Maine, and his travels as a frequent contributor to the pictorial magazines of the mid-20th century. These include LIFE, National Geographic, and LOOK.

In spite of the worldly focus of much of his work, Ruohomaa’s true passion was the photographic documentation of the lives of Maine people and a way of life that was rapidly fading. These images will be the focus of the talk.

During her tenure at the Maine State Museum, Bonner-Ganter served as the curator of the current exhibition, “The Passionate Photographer: Kosti Ruohomaa’s Maine in Magazine Photojournalism.” The exhibit features 60 images and includes vintage magazines and personal scrapbooks Ruohomaa kept to document his career. It will be on display through July 16.
