USM places at Collegiate Leadership

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The University of Southern Maine won the Collegiate Leadership Competition on April 9 at John Carroll University.

USM’s leadership program is based on the Lewiston-Auburn College campus.

In a dozen challenges, the students displayed their ability to work together, to communicate and act decisively. One test forced them to communicate efficiently as they verbally guided blindfolded teammates through a maze. In another, they built and navigated a boat made from household items such as cardboard and tape.

The group spent more than three months preparing, running its own challenges during marathon weekly practice sessions. Besides earning the top prize, the group also took home the spirit award for its demeanor during the competition.

Next year’s event will be held in Boston, said Jenkins, who serves on the competition’s board.
