Mystery Photo for May 1, 2016
Thousands of people drive past the subject of last week’s mystery photo every week on Route 26 in Bryant Pond next to the Woodstock Historical Society. The photo shows the back of a giant clothespin that once stood prominently on top of the Lewis M. Mann & Son Clothes Pin Manufacturing Company in West Paris, where they produced numerous products but best known for their large birch clothespins — Mann’s Best Clothes Pins. The company closed down in the ’60s. When contacted about being chosen as the winner, Mary Ellen Andrews of Auburn said that her grandfather was Lewis Mann, the founder of the company, and that she remembers visiting the mill often. “It was a little scary, but exciting with all the noise, big saws and belts spinning,” she said. Andrews is the winner of a $10 Subway gift card.
