MONMOUTH — Kent Ackley has announced his candidacy for House District 82, including Litchfield, Monmouth and Wales, as an independent candidate.

The seat is held by Randall Greenwood, R-Wales.

In a written statement, Ackley attributes his desire to serve to a variety of experiences, including a difficult patch in his youth, an excellent education, family support and business experience. His resilience, hard work and innovation have prepared him to be an effective representative, he said.

Ackley is a 1985 graduate of Monmouth Academy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Brown University in 1989 and a master’s degree in business administration at Bryant University in 2002.

For six years, he worked in teaching, higher education administration and consulting. He also created successful ventures in real estate investment, property management and environmental health for children.

Ackley returned to Monmouth to found 1 Big Sustainable Island, a nonprofit organization on Annabessacook Lake. On his island, he focuses on sustainable outdoor adventures, environmental education and alternative energy resourcefulness.

He serves as vice president of the Annabessacook Lake Improvement Association and volunteers regularly at Monmouth Academy.

He is married to Joanne Weiss and has four stepchildren and a granddaughter.
