TURNER — The driver killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Route 219 was identified Tuesday as Christopher L. Tibbetts of Chesterville.
Tibbetts, 27, was killed when his 2000 Volkswagen Jetta, heading east on Route 219, also known as Howes Corner Road, struck a 2012 Toyota Tundra driven by James S. Wetherell Jr., 30, of Minot, according to Chief Deputy William Gagne of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.
Tibbetts, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.
Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles.
Wetherell was taken by Turner Rescue to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with injuries and was treated and released, Gagne said.
The Toyota Tundra driven by Wetherell was registered to Comprehensive Land Technologies of China.
Both vehicles were demolished in the crash.
According to investigators, preliminary reports indicate that Tibbetts lost control of his vehicle and crossed the centerline. Impact appears to have occurred in the westbound travel lane.
The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
Emergency crews from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, Turner Fire and Rescue and Buckfield Rescue responded to the scene.
