1922 – 2016
SAINT ALBANS, Vt. — Mary J. Surrell passed away peacefully Saturday, April 30, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, Vt., with family and close friends by her side.
Mary was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Parsons, Kan., to Dewey and Alice (Helie) Stephenson. Mary grew up in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School. Shortly after graduation, Mary enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While serving in the military, she met her future husband, Joel Surrell. They were married Dec. 24, 1943. Mary was a homemaker for many years before joining the staff at the University of Vermont. She retired in 1987.
She leaves three sons, Joel Jr., Gary and Robert; two sisters, Barbara and Nancy; two brothers, Dewey and Leo Paul; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Joel, and five siblings.
