LISBON — The Town Council voted 7-0 Tuesday night to approve the $15.18 million school budget and the $138,640 adult education budget for 2016-17.
Both spending plans were recommended by the School Committee.
Although the 2016-17 budget is about the same as this fiscal year, the additional amount to be raised by taxpayers is just over $1 million, an increase of over $500,000 compared to the current year.
Last year, the council battled with the School Committee to keep the additional local funds to $477,356. That budget was defeated by voters four times because they said the budget was too low. The budget was finally approved by voters in January.
The municipal budget is estimated to be just over $8 million, but more changes will be made before the vote on May 21, Town Manager Diane Barnes said. This is a $503,690 increase over last year’s budget, which decreased the tax rate by 81 cents per $1,000 of property valuation.
Barnes asked the council to support adding $8,000 for a part-time position at the Town Office to help with the increase in new vehicle registrations. Councilors favored the request.
In other business, the council:
• Voted 7-0 to close roads for the Memorial Day Parade on May 30 beginning at 9 a.m. The parade will start at Crafts Cars on Route 196 to Main Street, to School Street to Addison and pause for a ceremony at Addison and Campus streets. The parade will continue to Berry Street, School Street and Route 196 to Lisbon High School.

• Welcomed Frosty’s Donuts to town. The new business held a grand opening Friday.
