AUGUSTA — Clif Bar is initiating a voluntary recall of three varieties of its bars after its supplier, SunOpta, was found to have distributed sunflower kernels that may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, according to a statement from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.

SunOpta has expanded its own recall of certain products because of the potential contamination.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in pregnant women, young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, according to the release.

The Clif Bars in the recall are: Nuts & Seeds energy bar all pack configurations with “best by” date ranges starting 08Jun16 through 21Jan17; Sierra Trail Mix energy bar all pack configurations with “best by” date ranges starting 05Jun16 through 24Mar17; and Mojo Mountain Mix trail mix bar all pack configurations with “best by” date ranges starting 16Jun16 through 02Feb17.

Clif Bar has not received any reports of illness, the release said.
