The following are portions of the winning essay from Oxford County. It was written by Hayley Peterson from Telstar High School.
Elder abuse is something that isn’t well known to many people. Elder abuse is the abuse or neglect of anyone past the age of 60 years old. The abuse usually comes from a caregiver or a person with a close relationship to the elder.
Physical abuse, neglect, financial abuse, abandonment, isolation, abduction or other behavior that causes physical harm, pain or mental suffering are all considered elder abuse.
I feel that any form of abuse should not be inflicted on anyone. Abuse can be damaging to someone’s mental well-being, physical appearance and state of mind.
Stopping elder abuse is very important to me because no one deserves to go through pain and suffering, especially in their later years in life. No one deserves to be neglected, to be starved, to be deprived of resources, to feel unloved or to be treated without care.
Many people are put into homes because they simply can’t take care of themselves and need some help. Some have no family visiting them, and caregivers become their family.
I have always been taught to have honesty, integrity and sincerity. When I see people being treated unfairly it makes me want to take action. I have volunteered at a facility helping the elderly with lunch and simply helping them smile.
I have gone into an elderly home numerous times with my grandfather and his therapy dog, helping people find happiness and comfort.
It is important for people to realize that those men and woman have contributed to this world in some way or another — raised families, worked hard and loved. We should honor their days by treating them fairly and kindly, showing them love and compassion.
Raising awareness of elder abuse is a very important thing that more people need to do. Becoming aware and more familiar with the situation can help not only stop elder abuse, but possibly save a life.
