100 years ago, 1916
Fred V. Tainter of Auburn, wishing to find who tampered with his auto and damaged it while it had been left in a Turner barn on account of the recent washouts, retained the services of Detective Maxime Beaulieu of Lewiston. Mr. Beaulieu went to Turner, Tuesday, and came back with the desired information. A boy had taken out the car with the simple intention of running it around, which he did, but trying to drive back into the barn he ran the car against a door.

50 years ago, 1966
The City of Auburn is not doing any spraying of privately-owned trees. City Manager Woodbury E Brackett wanted to make this clear today. Recently it was announced that the city was hiring the Frank Reynolds Tree Co. to spray trees in the city, and confusion followed. Brackett said when it was announced that trees would be sprayed, this meant city owned trees along the streets of the city. His office and the Auburn Street Department have received many calls requesting the spraying of privately-owned trees.

Free compost … come and get it! Beginning next month, compost produced in a pilot project will be available to Lewiston and Auburn residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Since last October, the Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control Authority has been producing compost made from a combination of sludge — the byproduct of the waste water treatment process — and a variety of amendments, such as sawdust, leaf and yard clippings, and newspaper.
