NEW GLOUCESTER — Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village will offer a series of traditional craft workshops and educational nature walks Saturday, June 25, at 707 Shaker Road, Route 26.
Fused/Pieced Quilting with Carol MacDougall: Participants will learn how to build detail in an art quilt through applique and stitching techniques. Cost is $85.
Dovetails Woodworking with Chris Becksvoort: Participants will learn proper layout procedure, techniques and tricks to make a dovetail joint. The workshop is three hours, and morning and afternoon sessions are available. Cost is $50.
Beginner’s Rug Hooking with Beth Miller: Miller will teach participants how to hook wool into a small Shaker-inspired pillows which will be filled with buckwheat and lavender. Cost is $70.
Herbal Dream Pillows with Betsey Golon: Workshop attendees will create two dream or comfort pillows filled with aromatic herbs from the Shakers’ historic herb garden. Cost is $50.
Beginner’s Woodcarving with Norm Devonshir: Participants will complete their own finished carving of a sheep. This workshop is for ages 14 and older. No prior carving experience is necessary. Cost is $50.
Gelatin Printmaking from the Shaker Garden with Bonnie Faulkner: Faulkner will teach this monotype printmaking technique using herbs and flowers picked from the Shakers’ historic gardens. Cost is $55.
Simple Book Binding with Bonnie Faulkner: Participants will use the gelatin prints from Faulkner’s morning class or other fancy papers to create several small books using three different binding techniques. Cost is $55.
Nature’s Outdoor Classroom with Carolyn Fensore: This 2½ hour hike winds through the Shakers’ 1,800 acres of diversified habitats while a guide identifies and explains flora, fauna, geological formations and Shaker history along the way. Hikers will see evidence of glacial and geological forces that formed the land and watershed, including Sabbathday Lake’s Loon’s Point and the hidden treasure of Aurelia’s Cascade. The walk is free.
Preregistration is required for workshops. Reservations for the nature walk are suggested but not required.
