LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus has announced its upcoming August classes.
All classes are free and take place at 8 Falcon Road, unless noted. The center is fully accessible. Hearing assistive equipment is available.
Researching Your Family History: Choice of Tuesday, Aug. 9, 16, 23 or 30, at 9 a.m., 10:15 a.m., noon, or 1:15 p.m. Researcher Carroll N. Holmes will use several genealogical web sites to find people on attendees’ family trees. Those planning on attending should bring whatever family information they have, such as names, dates and places of births, marriages and deaths, if available.
Night Sky Watch: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9. Denis Bouttenot will teach the different kinds of telescopes and how they work, including the Hubble, radio and X-ray telescopes. He will demonstrate a computer program called StarGazer, whcih can be used to look at different stars, planets, moons and galaxies.
Maine Author Series: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9. Dylan Volk, co-author of “Chasing the Rabbit: A Dad’s Life Raising a Son on the Spectrum,” will discuss with his grandfather the challenges and joys of the grandfather/grandchild relationship and the impact autism has had on it.
Using Windows 10: 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31. Tim Verrill of SeniorsPlus will teach this class geared toward those who already have Microsoft Windows 10 and want to get the most out of it. He will discuss new features, what’s changed in Windows 10, how to work the menu, settings, security, Windows store and updates.
Medical Updates: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11. Alan Verrill, MD, will discuss what’s been happening in medicine and with his family since his last presentation at SeniorsPlus in July 2015.
Shiloh: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16. Retired educator Bill Hiss will discuss Shiloh, which was at one time the largest Bible school in the world, located here in Maine. It was the brainchild of charismatic religious leader Frank Weston Sandford, a former minister and Bates College graduate. Followers had to surrender all of their life savings and earthly possessions to enter his temple.
Passwords, PassCodes, and Memory, Oh My!?!: 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Aug. 18. Jill Spencer of BoomerTECH will teach tricks and tips to manage the various passwords associated with digital devices. She will discuss ways to remember them, places to record them and device security. All devices are welcome.
A New Maine Law: Helps Fight ID Theft and Credit History: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. Instructor is David M. Leach, MPA, principal consumer credit examiner with the Maine Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection. The agency is designed to protect Maine residents by overseeing many of the financial businesses consumers deal with, such as debt collectors and loan bankers. The agency also responds to consumer complaints, issues licenses and provides consumer education. Leach will discuss recent changes in the credit reports and file freezes.
Medicare Basics: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. Attendees can learn the basics and timelines of the Medicare system, such as when they must sign up and for what, and ways to save money.
AARP Smart Driver: 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23. Drivers 55 and older who complete this class are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance for three years. Attendees should bring their driver’s license and lunch. Cost is $15 for AARP members or $20 for nonmembers, payable to AARP. Members should bring their cards.
Clutter Control: Tips for Gaining the Upper Hand on Your “Stuff”: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25. It will also be offered at via streaming at West Paris Public Library and 218 Fairbanks Road, Farmington. Deborah McLean of Maine Senior Guide will help those paralyzed by the amount of stuff they’ve accumulated get a grip on their belongings and their sanity by learning a few clutter-control tips. Gentle Morning Chair Yoga for Seniors: 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays, Aug. 22 through Oct. 24, with no classes on Sept. 5 or Oct. 10. Instructor Tisha Bremner will help attendees increase vitality, gain a deeper sense of balance and find their inner calm. Class combines meditation, warmups, light stretches and gentle yoga postures. Cost is $40 for an eight weeks, or $8 per class on a drop-in basis.
Total Strength and Balance Training: 11:15 a.m. to noon Mondays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Linn Morin, certified trainer, will teach these classes, which are geared toward anyone, beginner or advanced, who is interested in improving strength, balance and bone density.
