LEWISTON — James Myall, former coordinator of the University of Southern Maine Lewiston-Auburn College’s Franco-American Collection, will give a talk at the college at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4.

The talk will be in Room 170 at 51 Westminster St. He will present “Sous les Drapeaux: Franco-American Voices from the Front Lines.” It’s part of the series “Franco-Americans During Wartime: A Heritage of Service.”

The presentation will look at various unique aspects of the service of Franco-Americans in the armed services, including divided national identities, use of the French language, and questions of patriotism and discrimination before, during and after wartime. The presentation will encompass service in a variety of military branches, as well as auxiliary services, from the 20th century to the present day.

Myall holds a master’s degree in ancient history and archaeology from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and a master’s degree in public policy and management from the University of Southern Maine. During his time as coordinator of the Franco-American Collection, he also served as an adjunct professor of American history and government at Lewiston-Auburn College. He was the executive director of the Freeport Historical Society from 2014 until December 2015, when he joined the Maine Center for Economic Policy as a policy analyst. He is the co-author of “The Franco-Americans of Lewiston-Auburn” and was a consultant for the state legislative task force on Franco-Americans in 2012.
