100 years ago, 1916
Thomas Chase of Auburn and Buckfield reports that they will harvest about 1,000 barrels of apples at the Chase farm this season. The picking has already commenced. Owing to the excessive shipping rates they will find a market for the greater part of the crop in this county. He reports that the Greenings are of excellent quality and that the Baldwins are coloring well. No hail has damaged their crop during the summer.

50 years ago, 1966
(Photo Caption) Androscoggin Sheriff Robert W. Bonenfant and Chief Deputy Rosaire Martel check over two of the three new sub-machine guns which the sheriff’s department recently obtained. Sheriff Bonenfant is holding a foreign-made, light-weight weapon which fires 9mm ammunition. The weapon has a folding stock which fits compactly against the side of the gun when not used for shoulder firing. Martel is displaying one of the two new Thompson sub-machine guns obtained at the same time. The second such weapon is seen in the gun cabinet in the department’s guard room, along with the rest of the department’s arsenal which includes rifles, shotguns, revolvers, tear gas guns and grenades.

The first job-sharing arrangement by city employees will give the Lewiston Public Library “two sets of creative ideas” and “a new burst of energy,” says Susan Pease, one of the workers. Pease and Elizabeth Sampson on Wednesday began a schedule in which each works 20 hours weekly as children’s librarian. Both are confident that their styles and approaches are compatible and that the children’s program will run smoothly and professionally.
