Wentzell awarded Citizen of the Year

RUMFORD — Rumford Grange No. 115 presented its Citizen of the Year Award to Fire Chief Gary Wentzell Sept. 15.

Wentzell has been a member of the Mexico Fire Department for 34 years, and chief for 26. In his selection, the town said Wentzell chooses anything for the good of his “people.” He also has a private auto body business.

Every dining table at the event was filled, showing proof of the respect and affection held for Wentzell.

Planting for spring at PPL

PARIS — Paris Public Library and local families and children will plant spring bulbs at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, in the library’s garden in its parking lot.

The library will provide the bulbs to plant, including crocuses, daffodils and tulips that will bloom next spring.

Those attending should bring a trowel if they have one.

Daughters of Isabella to meet

RUMFORD — St. Timothy’s Circle No. 504, Daughters of Isabella, will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Holy Savior Church Hall.

Chairwomen will be Debbie Laurinaitis and Rita Thorne. Committee members are Dorothea Cayer, Marie Boudreau, Noella Taylor and Sharon Rickards.

Gladys Gilbert will be congratulated on her 63 years of membership with the group.

Attendees are asked to donate nonperishable food items or cash donations to their annual Thanksgiving Food Raffle. Goods or donations may be brought to the October meeting or to Nancy Martineau after the 9:30 a.m. Mass Sundays.

Tickets for the raffle may be purchased from members at the church bingo between 5 and 6 p.m. The winner will be drawn Nov. 19 at the Holy Savior Christmas Fair.

Bethel Seniors to meet

BETHEL — The Bethel Senior Citizens Club will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Bethel Methodist Church for a meeting and potluck dinner. This is a change in location.

Members should bring a dish to share.

Cancer center volunteer open house

NORWAY — The Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine will host open houses for those interested in becoming volunteers from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 11 and 12.

Volunteers provide one or more of the following services: supervise drop-in hours, assist with mailings or phone calls, set up and monitor classes, make cards, write thank-you notes, lead activities or assist with the library.

The center is also looking for a facilitator for a caregiver’s support group, men’s group and for volunteers who would like to serve on the board of directors.

West Paris church seeking volunteers

WEST PARIS — The ladies of the Goodwill Fellowship of the First Universalist Church of West Paris are looking for volunteers to help tend to the graves of loved ones in West Paris, Woodstock and Paris.

The women will place silk flowers on graves for Memorial Day and/or a wreath on graves before Christmas. Each spring the women rake up debris and remove weeds.
