I have to agree with Neil Bourgoin (letter, Oct. 8) that the U.S. is “progressing toward socialism.” Especially with corporations, where the executives are furnished vehicles and all expenses are taken care of. Those same executives get free medical insurance, vacations with pay, stock options, meal expenses and a good retirement package with bonuses.
Corporations keep wages low for the work force, using part-time help with no benefits. They are fine with government programs stepping in to furnish necessities. That is what is called capitalism.
Defense industries support war efforts and profit handsomely, but the executives don’t pay for it. Those same executives then complain about the national debt.
Meanwhile, Congress “borrows” money from Social Security and doesn’t pay it back.
I remember well the song that went something like “Ten percent, that’s the rent. Anyone can pay for a home in the USA.”
