Updated 12:46 p.m.: LEWISTON — Lewiston Public Works tackled sanding sidewalks Tuesday after Sunday’s rain turned to ice coated sidewalks making walking treacherous.

On Tuesday, Public Works released the list of sidewalks that are being sanded, which includes much of downtown: Chestnut, Lincoln, Main, Middle, Park, Spruce, Bates, Pine, Ash, Birch, Central, Campus and East avenues, Farwell, North Temple, Old Greene Road, Sabattus and Lisbon streets.

Police urged pedestrians Monday to “be visible” on downtown streets, and asked motorists to pay attention as icy sidewalks prompted people to walk in roadways.

Until the weather warms and sidewalks become ice-free again, “it’s really important that everyone slows down, pays attention to the roadway conditions, and looks out for everyone’s safety,” Lewiston Police Department Community Resource Officer Joseph Philippon said.

Motorists need to take special care “and make sure your windshields are free from obstructions like snow,” Philippon said. “If you see any hazards or safety concerns, please report them.”

Public Works Director David Jones said sidewalks were plowed Monday and workers would begin sanding Tuesday. “It will take time,” he said. “Be patient and careful.”

He advised pedestrians to use crosswalks. If walking after dark they need to wear bright colors or white. “Better yet, make your trips during the day,” Jones said.
