AUGUSTA — It is with great sadness that we announce that Albert L. “Boots” Bailey passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 16, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta at the age of 86.

Boots was born in Randolph, Mass., on March 29, 1930, the son of Harold and Hattie (Whiting) Bailey. He graduated from Stetson High School in 1949 and joined the U.S. Army a year later. He served in Germany, Eniwetok Atoll, Alaska and Vietnam. He retired after 22 years of service and went on to earn a degree in criminal justice. He worked for the Maine Department of Motor Vehicles as an investigator, later retiring from there as well.

In his retirement, he and his wife, Elizabeth traveled in their fifth wheel camper to all the lower 48 states except Rhode Island. For the next 18 years, they wintered in Florida and spent summers in Wayne. Boots was a member of the Wayne Community Church, Alfred W. Maxwell Post 40, American Legion, and Lafayette Lodge No. 48 in Readfield.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Elizabeth (Giles) Bailey; his sister, Velma Jewell of Monmouth; sons, Andrew Bailey and his wife, Laurel, of Middleborough, Mass., and John Bailey and Lorraine of Middleborough, Mass.; stepchildren, Cynthia Curtis and her husband, Ronald, of East Dixfield, David Gay and his wife, Karen, of Lisbon Falls and Ronald Gay of Wayne; his grandchildren, Kristin Leigh, Andrea Bailey and Michael Bailey; step-grandchildren, Mark Welch, Jonathan Welch, Ryan Gay and Crystal Gay.

Boots was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Will Bailey.
