LEWISTON — Eugene P. Hooper, 93, of Turner passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 16, at d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston.
He was born in Lewiston on March 13, 1923, the son of the late Henry and Leone (Moors) Hooper. He grew up in the Turner area and attended local schools there. He was a graduate of Leavitt Institute, Class of 1941.
After high school, Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and proudly served his country during World War II. After being discharged from the military, he later met and married Dorothy Godfrey on Feb. 28, 1948, in Winthrop and they started a family together. During that time, he had worked for various union companies as an electrician for 55 years until his retirement in 1987.
Eugene was a member of the Winthrop Lodge Masons and was also a member of the IBEW Local 567, the New England Sled Dog Club and the Maine Sled Dog Club.
He loved watching birds around his yard and home. He was also very passionate about sled dog racing and his trips to Rangeley for fishing and relaxing. All you had to say was “Rangeley” and he was on his way to the car.
Eugene is survived by his three children, Jeff Hooper and his wife, Cheryl, of Turner, Jennifer Stevens and her husband, Walter, of Greene and Jean Gray and her husband, Randy, of Turner. He also leaves behind his five grandchildren, Chris Gray, Sam Smith, Wisha Owensbye, Bridget Thompson and Brian Hooper; along with his eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Dorothy, in 2013; and his granddaughter, Krista Hooper.
