LISBON — The State Fire Marshal’s Office says a local man seriously burned Tuesday night was playing with lighter fluid while he was intoxicated.
Lisbon police said they responded to a call about a man on fire at about 7 p.m. Tuesday at 706 Lisbon St. When police arrived, they found 37-year-old Cory Mathis with serious burns. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and treated for second-degree burns.
Investigators said Mathis was pouring lighter fluid on his hands and lighting it earlier Tuesday evening, according to a statement by Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland. Mathis put the lighter fluid container in his pants pocket, where it leaked, according to the statement. Witnesses told investigators that Mathis went into a hallway and returned with his clothing on fire.
Mathis had second-degree burns on his legs and facial injuries, according to McCausland’s statement.
