Fire Chief applications

What happened: Interim Town Manager Rebecca Lippincott told selectmen she has received 25 applications for fire chief. The deadline was March 1.

What’s next: Lippincott will turn the applications over to the Fire Chief Hiring Committee to review and make a recommendation on whom she should hire. She hopes to fill the position by the end of April.

Town vehicle policy

What happened: Town Clerk Beth Olsen presented a draft motor vehicle safety policy to selectmen.

What it means: The policy stipulates that town, private or rental cars used for town business will only be driven by authorized employees who meet certain criteria, including no use of intoxicants, drugs or medications that impair driving, and a valid license and satisfactory driving record. Employees must walk around the car before driving it, wear seat belts, not smoke and not use it for personal use unless preauthorized in writing by a supervisor. The policy also covers areas such as cellphone use and accident reporting.

What’s next: The policy will be presented to the Safety Committee for review on March 14. It will be returned with comments to the Board of Selectmen for action at the following board meeting.

Tax-acquired property

What happened: Olsen said the town has acquired 12 properties for nonpayment of taxes. She recommended one be returned to the owner because a structure was overvalued for several years and the owner had paid more than what he would have been taxed under the new valuation.

What’s next: Selectmen will hold a workshop to discuss the other properties.

Planning Board action

What happened: The board reviewed a request from the Planning Board to start its meeting 30 minutes earlier than stated in its bylaws.

What it means: The Planning Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. the second Thursday of the month. If necessary, a second meeting will be held the fourth Thursday of the month.
