AUGUSTA — A Maine state senator says the southern part of her state might face a shortage of engineers and the Legislature should consider opportunities to reverse the trend.
Sen. Amy Volk, a Republican from Cumberland, has introduced a proposal to tackle the issue. Her bill would require the University of Maine System to study the engineering workforce and the applied research and technical assistance needs of Maine businesses.
Volk says the study would help develop recommendations to increase engineering capacity in southern Maine. She says one way to tackle a shortage could be by strengthening programs at the University of Southern Maine.
She says the proposal could eventually make it possible for the university to make a third engineering program available.
