(Page One Headline) WAR IS DECLARED BY U.S. — House Passed War Resolution at 3 O’Clock This Morning. Young Men of 19 to 25 Years of Age To Be Called First. Service in the National Guard and Naval Reserves is encouraged in a bulletin issued to the employes of the Lewiston, Augusta & Waterville street railways and applied companies. While the company cannot guarantee to make up the difference in pay to all men, exceptions will be made in cases requiring special treatment by reason of dependent families. The positions and ratings of men that enlist will not be lost and absence from work will not be considered a break in service.

50 years ago, 1967
The Franklin Company has turned over a deed to Lewiston Mayor William Rocheleau Jr. for an 11-acre-plus tract of land in “the pasture” which may be used as the site of a proposed amphitheater, it was learned this week. The deed was given to the city at no cost, an official said, for educational, municipal or cultural requirements which the city may have. The tract involved is located adjacent to the Marcotte Park off Birch Street, Lewiston. It measures about 1,200 feet in length, and 400 feet in depth. It was also pointed out that under terms of the deed, the city has five years within which to erect some kind of structure estimated at $500,000.

They’ll be ice skating. They’ll be figure skating. They’ll be playing hockey. And, they’ll be doing it in November without having to contend with the vagaries of winter weather. The Auburn City Council voted unanimously Monday night to authorize the selling of $400,000 in bonds to erect a building over the ice rink at Pettengill Park. For years, the rink’s users have lost countless hours of ice time because wind, rain, snow and sun kept getting in the way. Although the city is borrowing the money on behalf of the Auburn Youth Hockey Association, the group’s chairman, George Roberge, assured the Council that bond payments could be met through ice time rentals, which should also generate enough money to help defray operating costs.
