It was a strong championship season for Lewiston sophomore Brooke Cloutier, and the speedy swimmer has earned her place as the Sun Journal Girls’ Swimmer of the Year.

She placed first in the 100-yard beast stroke and second in the 50-yard freestyle at the KVAC Championships. She also helped the Blue Devils to a third-place finish in the 200-yard medlay relay. At the state championships, she finished third in the 100-yard breast stroke with a time of 1:10.12. She also finished third in the 200-yard IM. In the relays, she helped Lewiston to a eighth-place finish in the 200-yard medley and a 16th-place finish in the 400-yard relay.

“I really worked hard this season and my past seasons,” Cloutier said. “I have been swimming for ten years, and it’s all been hard work.”

Her second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.68 broke the school record. Only a sophomore she has sights on other school records in the coming years.

“I am definitely excited for these next two seasons,” Cloutier said. “There’s a lot I want to accomplish on this team, and I am excited to see how good the Lewiston team develops in the next two years. Some goals I’d like to accomplish are records. I have my eye on the 100-yard breast stroke record.”

She said she isn’t sure what the exact record is, but she knows she’s nearing the time.

Coach Troy Boutin said she was at her best in the big events.

“I think that she really loves to swim and compete consistently,” Boutin said. “Over the course of the season, she put up her best times when she had good competition or something to fight for. Whether it was coming from behind at an end of a relay or something along that line – a record that she really wanted.”

Boutin remembers one relay race where she was the anchor leg and the first place team had a seven yard advantage when she hit the water. Cloutier was able to overcome the deficit to win the race for the Blue Devils.

Lewiston High School swimmer Brooke Cloutier races in the 200 IM at Tuesday’s Class A state swimming and diving championships at Bowdoin College. Cloutier finished third in the race with a time of 2:17.73.
