LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus has announced its upcoming classes in May at its education center, 8 Falcon Road. 

Polarity and Myofascial Release Therapy: 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 2. Polarity therapy balances the flow of energy in the body to improve or maintain health. Myofascial release is a safe, hands-on therapy that involves applying light pressure to the fascia connective tissue to remove pain and restore proper motion. These therapies can treat back pain, headaches, chronic pain, carpal tunnel, head trauma, TMJ, chronic fatigue syndrome, and other ailments. Instructor: Deborah Roberts, Polarity Therapist and Myofascial Release practitioner.

Crafting with Corinne: 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3. This class will create basic stamping cards. The class is open to all levels, but limited to eight people. Instructor: Corinne Saindon, local artisan.

Jazzed on Java: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 4. Participants will sample freshly brewed coffee from around the world and hear about the history of coffee, where it comes from, and how it’s grown, harvested, processed, and shipped. Instructor: John Chick, SeniorsPlus.

Downsizing Made Easy: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 9. This program will guide its participants through the process of downsizing the mass of items they have collected over the years. Instructors: Kim Dorsky and Liz Pattison, SimplySized Home.

Making Poetry Fun: 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 9. This is a no-pressure poetry class to show anyone how easy it is. Participants should come prepared with paper, pens, and some type of reading material (newspaper, magazine, book, etc.). It will be the basis to write poetry. Class is limited to 12 people. Instructor: Pauline Fortin.

Intro to Homeopathy: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 11. Homeopathy is a 200-year-old natural healing system. Homeopathic medicine is widely used around the world in mainstream health care, both alone and along with other conventional treatments. Line Dancing: noon to 1 p.m Thursdays, May 11, 18, and 25. Line dancing is all about fun, exercise, discipline, and good music, and it is a great stress reliever. Prior dance knowledge is not necessary and no partner needed. This is a three-week long workshop. Class limited to 15. Instructor: Denise Hebert.

What’s New in Windows 10: 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 11. A little different from previous Windows 10. Class limited to 24. Instructor: Tim Verrill.

Safe Driving: 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16. Drivers 55 and older who complete this class are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance for three years. Drivers should bring a driver’s license, and members of AARP should bring a membership card. There will not be a lunch break, but participants may bring snacks to eat during the class. Cost: $20, payable to AARP for nonmembers; $15 for AARP members. Instructor: Court Dwyer, AARP.

Living Heart Healthy: 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 18. Heart disease is the single leading cause of death for men and women. Participants will review the signs and symptoms, and discuss what individuals can control, to help improve quality of life while living with heart disease. Instructor: Angela Moore, Beacon Hospice.

Tech HodgePodge: 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 18, or from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 23. This class will discuss topics including passwords, Email, and online safety. Participants will learn about common password issues, and how to reset and organize them. The class will also cover how to set up email on a phone, tablet, or PC, plus email basics and how to stay safe online. Class size is limited to 24 per session. Instructor: Tim Verrill.

Medicare Basics: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 18. Participants will learn the basics and timelines of this complex system, when to sign up for what, and ways to save money. Instructor: SeniorsPlus staff.

Effective Communication: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 30. Communication is more than just talking and listening; it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia lose their ability to use words, families need new ways to connect. This class will identify strategies to help connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. Instructor: The Alzheimer’s Association.

Brain Injury: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30. This group is made up of individuals who have experienced a brain injury. Members share personal stories and education about brain injury. Our presentations offer hands-on activities, simulating challenges a person can experience after a brain injury. There will also be a handout of general information about the brain, a focus on brain injury in the elderly, and prevention tips. Instructor: Westside NeuroRehab Brain Injury Education Group.

SeniorsPlus has two ongoing fitness classes, for which some insurance companies offer reimbursement. Individuals must contact their own insurance agencies to determine eligibility.

Gentle Chair Yoga: 9 to 10 a.m.  Mondays through June 12 (No class May 29). The class is designed to increase vitality, gain a deeper sense of balance and find inner calm. Combines meditation, easy warm-ups, light stretches, and gentle yoga postures. Cost: $40 for eight weeks; $8 drop-in fee. Instructor: Tisha Bremner.

Total Strength & Balance, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Mondays, or 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays (No class May 29). These classes are for all — beginner or advanced — who are interested in improving strength, balance and bone density.
