CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy recognized students for their strength of character, seamanship, and overall leadership on campus during the Regimental Awards Banquet on March 20. 

Local award winners included:

Chief Engineer’s Citation: Midshipman Kurt Carlson, a freshman from Topsham.

Commandant’s Citation: Midshipman David McCann, a freshman from New Gloucester; and Midshipman Coady Lagasse, a junior from Poland.

Band & Drill Participation Award: Zach Hollen of Freeport.


ELMIRA, New York — Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, recently inducted 35 new student members into the Elmira College chapter, including local students Elizabeth Callahan of Mechanic FallsAudrey Thames of Topsham and Alexandria Woodard of Greene.

ELMIRA, New York — Kristen Fecteau of Gray was one of 12 seniors awarded cords by the Elmira College Rho Mu Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education during a special ceremony celebrating teachers.

POULTNEY, Vermont — Julia Ramsey of New Sharon has been awarded Majora Carter Award from Green Mountain College. 


HARTFORD, Connecticut — Sarah R. Kennedy of Lewiston was awarded faculty honors by Trinity College.

DOYLESTOWN, Pennsylvania — Chotika Apaipakdee of Bethel has received a merit-based admission schoolarship from Delaware Valley University.

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — Melissa DeStefano of Norway, a student at University of New England, was selected by the Alpha Chi National Honors Society to present her scholarly research presentation in the discipline of Environmental Sciences at the Alpha Chi National Convention in Louisville in April.

The project, “The Packaging Project,” details the ways that companies overuse and misuse resources when packaging goods for fulfillment and how they can alter their processes to go “greener” and be more sustainable.


ORONO — Local residents were initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Maine.

WORCESTER, Massachusetts — Assumption College honored students with awards for academic excellence at its annual Honors Convocation in April.

During the ceremony, Vincent Beaulieu of Gray, Class of 2017, received the departmental award for management.

HUTCHINSON, Kansas — Cassidy G. Pelchat of Lisbon, a student at Hutchinson Community College, has been awarded the Freeman-Asia Award from the Freeman Foundation and was named a Gilman Scholar by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs.

Pelchat will be studying at Shanghai International Studies University in China this summer via Carnegie Mellon University’s study abroad program.
