GREENE — Maine-ly Harmony, an all-female a cappella chorus, will perform free concerts at 2 and 7 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial, 371 Sawyer Road.
The chorus is directed by Kathy Greason and meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 36 Eastern Ave., in Augusta. The chorus is a chapter of Harmony Inc., an international organization that offers competitions, coaching and educational classes throughout the year.
Barbershop harmony is a style of four-part, unaccompanied singing. The style is characterized by a dominant, familiar melody sung by the “lead” and supported by three harmony parts — the tenor above the lead, the bass below the lead, and the baritone, filling in the middle chords. The style is adaptable to songs of many eras — from those sung in the parlor in the 1890s to songs of today.
