SUMNER – At least two acres burned Thursday afternoon after a woods fire spread out of control along Greenwoods Road.

Crews from more than half a dozen departments were battling the blaze at about 5 p.m. using all-terrain vehicles to get at the flames.

Sumner firefighters called for help from area departments, including Buckfield, West Paris, Woodstock, Greenwood, Paris, Norway, Canton, Mexico, Dixfield, Turner and Mechanic Falls.

The fire was first reported shortly before 4 p.m. in the area of Varney Road north of Route 219.

Police closed a section of Greenwoods Road as heavy winds fanned the flames and fire crews fought to contain the blaze.

Firefighters called for a helicopter, although the copter was later canceled.

There were no immediate reports of injury.
