AUBURN — Stephen Gregory Weymouth, 60, died Wednesday, May 17, following a remarkable battle with lung cancer.

Steve was born the first of six children to Robert & Helen (Collins) Weymouth on May 1, 1957, in Augusta. As a child, he lived on both Highland Avenue and South Chestnut Street in Augusta, making lifelong friends with neighborhood kids. They would gather at the Weymouth household to play games, make music and cause trouble. These were some of Steve’s fondest memories.

Steve attended St. Mary’s elementary school and, soon after graduating from Cony High School in 1975, he drove cross-country, settling in Eugene, Ore. There, he spent 10 years honing his photography and music skills, making great friendships, and touring the West Coast with The High Prairie Band.

Steve’s lifelong love of music was kindled as a boy when he first watched his idol, Ringo Starr, play drums with the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. He bought his first drum set with his paper route money and, through the years, with countless drum sets, bands and musical genres, he lived his dream of being a successful working musician. Steve also had a passion for the visual arts and photography. He had degrees in Media Studies and Fine Arts from Lane College in Eugene, Ore., and the University of Maine at Augusta. Steve loved capturing and sharing the unusual — and often hidden — side of the human condition in his photographic work. Steve was also a devoted reader with an impressive library of biographies on musicians, gangsters and photographers.

Gregarious and outgoing by nature, Steve always livened up a room with his wicked sense of humor and determination to coax a smile from every person he met. He loved his family and friends dearly.

In 1985, he drove back to Maine with his soon-to-be wife, Andrea, their cat, and pet ferret. Turning his passion into a living, he became the media coordinator for Central Maine Medical Center, taking & developing photos for the hospital. On the weekends, he played with the bands Burly Brothers and Dirty McCurdy. Steve & Andrea settled in Auburn, where they raised two children, Eliza Chelsea & Isaac Gregory.
