LEWISTON — Yvette A. LaChapelle, 76, a lifelong resident of Lewiston, passed away on her birthday, Saturday, June 17, at in her home in Lewiston, surrounded by her family.

She was born June 17, 1941, in Lewiston, the daughter of Alfred Gagne and Irene (Champagne) Gagne. She was a 1959 graduate of Lewiston High School and also attended University of Maine. On June 10, 1961, at Holy Family Church in Lewiston, she married Paul LaChapelle of Auburn. When her children were young, Yvette devoted her time to caring for her family and her home. She later went to work at Bates College in the administration department.

She was a communicant of St. Philip’s Church, and served as Eucharistic minister for many years; she was also very involved in St. Philip’s Family Group and St. Philip’s Town Meeting. Yvette was president of the Lewiston-Auburn Jaycee wives, June 1972 through May 1973. She also worked for years with the Center for Parish Ministry. Yvette unselfishly gave five years as executive member of the Lewiston Bicentennial Committee and also volunteered seven years at Hospice House of Androscoggin in Auburn.

She is survived by her husband, Paul LaChapelle of Lewiston; her children, Pauline Powell and her husband, Rick, of Lewiston, Rick LaChapelle and his wife, Monique, of Lewiston, and Joline Sawyer and her husband, Scott, of Northport, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one on the way; her sister, Rose Rogalla and her husband, John, of Illinois; and her brother, Roger Gagne and his wife, Malika, of Lewiston.

She was predeceased by her sister, Aline Caron; and her brother, Joseph Raymond Gagne.
