LEWISTON — Motorcycle enthusiasts and veteran advocates from all over the state will join to raise money to expand the veterans’ program at Healing Through Horses, New Gloucester, on Saturday, Aug. 5.
The group will gather at 9:30 a.m. to register at L/A Harley Davidson. Suggested donation is $25 a rider and $10 a passenger. At 10:30 a.m., kickstands will go up for a ride through scenic Maine.
A stop at Sunday River Brew Pub in Bethel is planned where riders may rest up and grab a bite to eat before heading to the American Legion Hall in Gray for an afternoon of festivities, including raffles, door prizes, contests, 50/50, music and bean dinner.
All proceeds from the day will support expansion of the veterans’ program. Healing Through Horses aspires to raise $20,000.
The growing field of equine therapy is showing promise in treating veterans and their families who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
At Healing Through Horses, staff works with veterans individually and in group settings. There are nine horses helping heroes at the facility. Veterans are matched with a clinician and a horse that suits their personalities and needs in order to maximize compatibility, support and success.
