Police investigate a fatal crash Tuesday night on Interstate 295 near Exit 10 in Falmouth.

FALMOUTH — A man in his 30s died when his car was struck from behind on I-295 Tuesday evening, according to a news release from Maine State Police.

Troopers say a motorist rear-ended a car, killing the driver, after traffic slowed because of another crash ahead.

The other driver, a teenage girl, was not injured, according to the release by Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

Their names will be released Wednesday morning, he said.

The crashes happened between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. State police urged drivers to seek other routes but hundreds of motorists were trapped on the highway with no alternatives. The northbound lanes and one southbound lane didn’t reopen until 10 p.m.

Maine Department of Transportation spokesman Ted Talbot said it is unusual for police to shut down the interstate in Greater Portland for such a long period.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
