As part of Spirit Week, students at the Buckfield Junior-Senior High School held a bottle drive to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. The students raised $931.26 and the teachers donated, bringing the total to $1,011.26. Margie Bickford, member of the Central and Mid Coast Maine chapter of the American Red Cross, told those gathered at Wednesday’s assembly at the high school that a $1,000 donation will provide food and shelter for a family of four for five days, including three meals a day, cots, blankets and comfort kits. The students presented American Red Cross representatives a check Wednesday. We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
