As a city councilor from Auburn, I voted against the referendum language concerning the merger of Auburn and Lewiston.

The referendum question states: “Do you approve the charter and consolidation agreement as recommended by the Lewiston Auburn Joint Charter Commission?”

The question should have, instead, stated: “Do you approve the merger of Auburn and Lewiston?”

The referendum question as it appears on the ballot makes no mention of a merger of the two cities. It assumes that voters are familiar with the details of the “consolidation agreement” as “recommended” by the joint charter commission.

Residents should read the referendum question very carefully and vote “no” against the “consolidation” (also known as merger) of Auburn and Lewiston.
