Elohim Nsumbu, a sixth-grader at Longley Elementary School, demonstrates a canopy test he created as part of the 21st Century after-school program during a community night in the school gymnasium Tuesday. His group is working through a Boston Museum of Science Curriculum, which requires students to write, talk and think like engineers. They are testing canopies and landing surfaces to minimize damage for aid drops in Thailand. The six 21st Century programs throughout Lewiston schools serve more than 450 students and are sought by parents looking for a safe place for children to be engaged after school.(Andree Kehn/Sun Journal)
