Veterans Day gives every American the opportunity to celebrate the courage, sacrifice, and bravery of this nation’s servicemen and women. As many people know, Veterans Day was established to honor all veterans of all wars. We also thank living men and women who served during peacetime.

This Veterans Day, the city of Lewiston should be recognized for its unwavering commitment to ending veteran homelessness. The city has been remarkably involved in prevention services, education and raising awareness — to honor the living. I am most grateful for the support for organizations such as Veterans Inc. and the Lewiston-Auburn Alliance of Services to the Homeless.

During the past three years of living and working in the city of Lewiston, I have observed great progress. I have also observed veterans, some of whom had lived on the streets, in encampments, in tents, in the woods and in places not meant for habitation, turn their lives around completely. They simply needed to be seen, heard, encouraged, validated and helped.

Promoting resilience ensures that the community succeeds. Therefore, I offer kudos to the city of Lewiston for acknowledging and helping our most vulnerable veteran population. The city has truly honored the living veterans.

Alley Smith, vice commander, District 3, Lewiston
