MEXICO — An effort is underway to raise money for a sign in the Mexico Recreation Park to remember Greg Arsenault, who passed away Sept. 19.
Arsenault was very active in the community, volunteering for years at the department before becoming its first full-time director.
At the selectmen meeting Nov. 7, Dwight Murphy said the sign will be placed at the Virgin Fields during a dedication night in the near future. He said he’s received a discounted price of $350 from Erik Designs of Rumford for the sign.
Selectmen voted to donate $100 toward the sign. Suggestions were shared about fundraising for the remaining cost.
In other business:
• Town Manager Jack Gaudet said Lenny Bolduc Carpentry of Peru will replace all 13 of the upstairs windows in the town hall starting Nov. 27. The energy-efficient windows cost $9,571.60. The downstairs windows will be replaced at a later date.
• Selectmen authorized Gaudet to purchase new recycle bins, which will require a deposit of $8.55 from users. The money will be refunded when bins are returned to the town.
• The board approved spending up to $11,169 for crack-sealing sections of Worthley Avenue and Gleason, Rose, Meadow, Orchard and Charles streets. The work will be done by Rhino-Seal Asphalt Maintenance Service of Mexico.
• Roland Patneaude of the Mexico Lions Club and Dave Duguay of the River Valley Area Rotary Club announced plans to replace their signs with a combined two-sided, 4- by 4-foot pressure-treated sign. Selectmen OK’d a spot for the new sign at the end of Water Street, near the Veterans Bridge.
• Selectmen approved the winter parking ban, which will be in effect beginning with the first plowable snowstorm. There will be no parking on any street or road between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. The parking ban will be in effect until April 20, 2018. Any vehicle in violation will be towed at the owner’s expense.
The board reminded the public that it is unlawful to plow or deposit snow or large bodies of ice in any street, lane, fire hydrant or public square.
