It was cold outside today in the Lewiston-Auburn area but there was one spot where it was hot — hot enough to make some workmen think that a bulldozer might catch fire. Firemen were called out to the city dump off the River Road, Lewiston, when the bulldozer was reported on fire. It turned out that the large machine was being used to push smoldering wastes over a slope when it stalled right over a bed of hot coals. Afraid the machinery might catch fire, the workmen called the Fire Department. The firemen arrived in time to water down the coals. No damage was reported to the expensive machinery.

Androscoggin County commissioners Monday voted not to give financial aid to the Town of Sabattus for state-ordered reconstruction of a municipal bridge. “It’s not the county’s responsibility nor the county’s practice to assist municipalities in maintaining and constructing roadways that are not county property,” Commissioner Carol Boyce said at Monday’s meeting. On Oct. 27 Sabattus Selectman Theodore P. Curran wrote to the commissioners requesting the county’s help in funding the replacement of Jordan Bridge located on Old Lisbon Road.
